Miriam Halahmy is an author, poet and Workshop Facilitator. Despite being English, she has Jewish roots, which are very present in her novels. She is also an activist of peace, and teaches us her moral convictions through her books. Her most remarkable works are:

For me this poem is very beautiful although very simple and meaningful too. It speaks about how every human being can make the world more peaceful with insignificant acts that we can all do  every day.

Mi tienda de la esquina                    
 My Corner shop                                           

Chilis verdes, ajo, boniatos                                            
Green chillies, garlic, sweet potato

Aún mojados por la lluvia de la mañana,                      
 still damp from morning rain,

Hakim grita “Uno de menta, uno de cilantro”                 
Hakim calls out, ‘One mint, one coriander’

Largos tallos dejan rastro como la hierba de la jungla    
long stems trail like jungle grass

Apilados en sus brazos,                                                

piled in his arms,

Los mantiene fresco                                                      

she keeps them cool out back                                                                                    

Más allá del mostrador de carne de Halal                     
 beyond the Halal meat counter                                                                                              

Llena bolsas de plástico, su madre está en la caja.       
fills plastic bags, his mother on the till.

Todo el mundo viene aquí                                             
 Everybody comes here

Judíos ortodoxos a por granadas, huevos blancos         
 Jewish orthodox for pomegranate, white eggs,

Tías hindúes a por pesadas calabazas,                        
 Indian aunties heft pumpkin,                                                                                                     

Buscan por entre bhindi, mezclan inglés, indio, inglés.

Señores mayores hambrientos de charla                        
Old men hungry for talk

Gastan media hora, una manzana, un plátano.                 
spend half an hour, one apple, one banana.

Nos empujamos los unos a los otros,                              
We jostle past each other

Cambio de cantinela, esperamos mientras un niño coloca peniques               
jingle change, wait as a child sorts pennies.

Somos el proceso de la paz, los moderados                   
We are the peace process, the moderate,

La madre, el hermano.                                                    
the mother, the brother.

Somos las noticias, el alto al fuego                                
We are the news, the ceasefire

Presionados como el cilantro en una palma arrugada.    
pressed like coriander in a wrinkled palm.

Somos la voz, la pancarta,                                             
We are the voice, the banner,

El apretón de manos, negra sobre blanca sobre aceitunada                                  
the handshake, brown on white on olive. 

Somos la oreja, el ojo, la promesa,                               
We are the ear, the eye, the promise,

Prisionero liberado, chica ilesa,                                  
prisoner released, girl  unharmed,         
bombardero acallado.
